Kicking Off AmeriCorps Week with Senator Blumenthal

Posted by Jerry Duchene Saavedra on May 16, 2011

The Connecticut Chapter of AmeriCorps Alums and ServeNext New Haven kicked off AmeriCorps Week Saturday, May 14th with quite a bang! Having partnered with The New Haven Land Trust, Alums were able to spend the morning in the Newhallville Neighborhood of New Haven, Connecticut revitalizing a local community garden. 20 Alums and Community Members were on hand to work throughout the 10 plot garden doing a variety of tasks such as mowing, weeding, clearing of debris, building new fence posting, and constructing a 3 section composter for the residents.

Having received a $1,000 grant from AmeriCorpsAlums.org, the Connecticut Chapter was able to put the grant to good use supplying tools, cement, and supplies to build the fence and composter. The Chapter staff was also able to secure generous donations of supplies from Home Depot and Panera Bread provided breakfast for up to 50 attendees.

Newly elected Senator Richard Blumenthal graciously stopped by to thank the Alums for their continued commitment to service and the country as well as offer a few words of support. ServeNext Organizer Katherine Jones was on hand and used this opportunity to ask the Senator to sign the ServeNext Pledge to expand national service.  The Senator signed the pledge on the spot and even took the time to pose for a picture with Katherine.  We want to thank Senator Blumenthal for his support of AmeriCorps and all national service programs and for his commitment to fight for expansion of these critical programs.

Overall, the Alums were able to give 5 hours of sweat equity to the New Haven Community and hope to continue the partnership with The New Haven Land Trust in the future.
