ServeNext New Orleans meets with Senator Vitter’s Office

On November 23rd, Tiffany Zapico of ServeNext New Orleans, Laura Paul of LowerNine.org, and Jim Coningsby of Phoenix of New Orleans met with David Doss, State Director for Senator Vitter, to discuss the value and impact of national service in New Orleans and the entire State of Louisiana.
Mr. Doss asked many questions and seemed especially impressed with the statistics highlighting the huge impact AmeriCorps members have had in New Orleans post-hurricane Katrina. We brought to his attention the major initiatives in the Serve America Act, which Senator Vitter voted No, that address disaster relief and recovery and asked him to pass along to the Senator that we want his support going forward. While the Senator did not vote to authorize the Serve America Act in early 2009, Congress votes annually on its funding levels. Mr. Doss acknowledged that he didn’t know the full context behind the Serve America Act but said he couldn’t imagine why Senator Vitter would vote against it.
Despite leaving with some questions still unanswered, Mr. Doss agreed to put us in contact with the Senator’s legislative staff. All in all, this meeting served as another great step to increase dialog between the service community and Senator Vitter.
