ServeNext Chicago Making Moves

Posted by Zach Maurin on October 28, 2010

Check-out this report from Patti, our Field Corps Organizer in Chicago, who is charged with developing the grassroots Network and mobilizing it:

Yesterday we went to the Chicago suburbs for a meet-and-greet with Illinois gubernatorial  candidate Bill Brady (R).  We had the chance to speak with him about ServeNext and how he can help expand service programs here in Illinois.  Both Caitlin and I talked of our service experience, and Caitlin shared her story of service with AmeriCorps – focusing on how it helped her find a job when she was unemployed and gave her the skills she didn’t even know she needed to work in a management position.

The candidate had a lot of questions about the cost of AmeriCorps programs, asking how much we made in the service year.  He was impressed that both of us lived on such a low income, directly saying “So you were living on less than $1,000 a month??”

We also got some face time with other candidates and volunteers, such as Attorney General candidate Steve Kim (R) – who loved what we were doing.  After he took a photo with us, he asked “Do you mind if I post this on my facebook page?”
Everyone we talked to was on board with our message!!

These campaign events are tremendous opportunities to engage candidates and discuss national service.  It’s not an issue they hear about too frequently, so grassroots engage both informs and inspires.  Great stuff ServeNext Chicago!
