HuffPost: Michele Bachmann’s Son Joins “Re-Education Camp”

Posted by Zach Maurin on August 12, 2009

In April, Congresswoman Michele Bachmann said that she believed AmeriCorps could become mandatory “re-education camps” for young people “where young people have to go and get trained in a philosophy that the government puts forward and then they have to go and work in some of these politically correct forums.”

Rep. Bachmann also said, “As a parent, I would have a very, very difficult time seeing my children do this.”

Well today the Huffington Post noted that Rep. Bachmann’s son has joined Teach for America, an AmeriCorps program:

The Star Tribune confirms what the blog Dump Bachmann has been reporting for weeks: Rep. Michele Bachmann’s son Harrison has joined Teach For America, part of what the Minnesota Republican considers a dreaded government re-education camp program called AmeriCorps.

While Bachmann’s claims were outrageous, this is how opponents of AmeriCorps become proponents: they visit programs, talk to those who are serving, and realize the incredible work they do.  Now, the Congresswoman will have a  “re-education” about AmeriCorps as her son voluntary serves for the next two years.

Note: AmeriCorps has always been voluntary and the Serve America Act — the recent legislation authorized by Congress and signed by President Obama to expand AmeriCorps and other service initiatives — continues this.
