Charles B. Rangel, D-N.Y.

According to House Action Reports from Congressional Quarterly, “This bill [introduced by Charles B. Rangel, D-N.Y.] includes several tax provisions intended to help military personnel and their families, veterans, volunteer firefighters and medical personnel, and other public servants. It changes certain eligibility rules under the Supplemental Security Income (SSI) program to assist military families, blind veterans, and AmeriCorps volunteers.

“The bill changes the eligibility rules for the SSI program to assist certain military personnel, veterans, and AmeriCorps volunteers. The SSI program, which is managed by the Social Security Administration, provides payments to low-income individuals who are aged 65 or older, are blind, or have a disability. Eligibility for the program is based on income and certain resources, including real estate, bank accounts, stocks, and bonds.”

AmeriCorps Volunteers

“The measure also excludes certain payments made to an AmeriCorps volunteer from the income calculations under the SSI program for purposes of determining eligibility and the amount of the benefit that would be received.”
