Big Announcement Tomorrow from Senator Dodd

Posted by Zach Maurin on May 15, 2008

Tomorrow, Senator Dodd (D-CT) along with lead co-sponsor Senator Cochran (R-MI) will announce the AmeriCorps Act of 2008. The event is tomorrow, Friday May 16th, from 10-10:30 in the Capitol, room SC-120. The event is open to the public, but they ask you to RSVP to by the end of today.

The AmeriCorps Act of 2008 includes:

  • Raise the education award to $6,185,the average annual cost of tuition and fees for an instate student at a four year public university
  • Make the education award tax exempt
  • Restore the Corporation’s previous authority to partner with other Federal agencies to use national service as a strategy to carry out Departments’ priorities
  • Promote the Corporation for National and Community Service to Cabinet level status.

This is all very exciting and Senator Dodd, a Peace Corps alum, is maintaining his passionate commitment to service. As an alum myself, it’s exciting to see the education award raised — something that hasn’t happen since it’s inception in 1993. Unfortunately, it’s probably not retroactive!

On another note, with all of these student loan groups emerging to battle the rising costs of college and student debt issues, isn’t there an opportunity to get them on board with scholarships in exchange for serving in AmeriCorps, Peace Corps, and other civilian service programs? They seem like they could be a great partner with the national service community for, at the least, this aspect of strengthening our country’s commitment to national service.
