During GOP debate Sen. McCain says he would ask more of Americans

Senator McCain, once a big adversary of AmeriCorps, continues to be one of its biggest champions in Washington and on the presidential campaign trail. The latest came during the last GOP debate in Michigan. Instead of asking Americans to “go shopping” as President Bush urged after 9/11, Senator McCain elaborated on his recent comments that he would as Americans to do more for the country: “I would have told them … consider the military, also the Peace Corps, also AmeriCorps, also neighborhood watches, also volunteer organizations.”
On the campaign trail, Senator McCain has told ServeNext members and volunteers that, if elected, he plans to double AmeriCorps.
In 2001, Senator McCain co-sponsored “The Call to Serve Act.” This bipartisan legislation with Senator Evan Bayh (D-IN) called for 250,000 AmeriCorps members by 2010. Unfortunately, the Act didn’t pass.
