Sen. Chris Dodd Signs ServeNext Pledge, Commits to Expanding National Service Opportunities

Activists Hail the Decision as “Bold and Courageous”
Washington, DC, June 19, 2007 – Senator and presidential candidate Christopher Dodd (D-CT) on Monday signed on to ServeNext’s “Presidential Pledge to Expand National Service”, according to ServeNext Director Patrick Schmitt. “This is an example of the type of bold and courageous leadership that the country needs,” said Schmitt.

By signing the Pledge, Senator Dodd commits to expanding a range of national service opportunities for Americans, including an expansion of AmeriCorps to at least 170,000 members – an increase of 100,000 members from current levels.
Signers of the pledge also commit to expaanding service-learning programs in America’s public schools, national service opportunities for Americans over the age of 55, and the Peace Corps, according the organization’s website, http://www.servenext.org.

Dodd, who has long been a supporter of national service in the Senate, spent two years in the Dominican Republic as a volunteer with the Peace Corps.

“The strength of America is in the energy, ideas and heart of her people. National service should be a priority for the next American President, because now more than ever, we must fully engage the talents of all Americans to meet the challenges before us,” said Dodd. “Our next President must also work to restore the sense of national community that has been lost to the divisiveness of the last six years. Service to one another and to our communities allows us to focus on the ties that bind us together, and that can only serve to strengthen the nation.”

“Senator Dodd clearly recognizes that not only is national service a winning campaign issue, it’s also an intelligent way to take on some of our nation’s most intractable problems. We hope the rest of the field will follow his lead,” said Zach Maurin, a spokesperson for ServeNext.
